Winner Creek Trail

Overview: Winner Creek Trail in the Chugach National Forest is a classic, hugely popular Alaskan hike that winds through dense spruce forest, along rushing creeks, and into a dramatic gorge with boardwalks and bridges. The trail’s signature moment is the crossing of the deep Winner Creek canyon—formerly done with a hand-powered tram and now experienced via a series of scenic bridges and viewpoints—making it a favorite for families, photographers, and anyone who wants big scenery without trekking into remote backcountry.

Trail Details:

Trail Length: ~4.25 miles
Duration: 2 to 3 hours
Difficulty Level: Moderate
Elevation Gain: 800 feet
Trail Type: Out-and-back

Key Features:

Alyeska Tram Trailhead: The most common access is just behind the Alyeska Resort / tram building in Girdwood, where the trail begins with boardwalks and interpretive signs.
Winner Creek Gorge & Bridges: The trail passes through a narrow, mossy gorge with roaring water below, multiple small bridges, and the dramatic crossing spot that used to host a hand tram. Plans and conversations about a replacement suspension bridge have been reported in recent years.
Boardwalks & Old Mining Remains: Sections feature elevated boardwalks over wet or sensitive terrain, with occasional historic mining-era artifacts and interpretive points along the way.
Upper Country Options: The lower trail is the most-visited; continuing into upper Winner Creek opens into wild, glacier-fed high country and much longer, more rugged hikes.

Trailhead Information:

Starting Point: Trailhead behind the Alyeska Resort (near the Alyeska Tram building in Girdwood).
Parking: Parking is available at Alyeska and nearby lots, and regional trail parking rules and day-use passes may apply—check local parking/day-use requirements before arriving.
Access: The Girdwood approach is paved/gravel to resort areas; the immediate trail is well-marked and easy to find from resort parking or village trailheads.

Best Season to Visit:

Summer (June–September): Best time for snow-free boardwalks, clear creek crossings, and accessible viewpoints. Peak wildflower and river flow viewing is typically in summer.
Fall: Early fall brings beautiful colors and fewer crowds, but be prepared for cooler temps and shortening daylight. Winter access requires winter skills and equipment.

Trail Tips:

Footwear: Sturdy hiking shoes are ideal—the lower trail is well-developed but can be wet and slippery on boardwalks and roots.
Bring Layers: Weather in the Chugach can change quickly; a windproof layer and waterproof shell are sensible even on fair days.
Water & Snacks: Carry water and snacks—there are creek views but limited easy water access without treatment.
Safety: Be bear-aware (carry bear spray in bear country and know how to use it), watch footing on the gorge sections, and be cautious near edges and viewpoints.
Trail Conditions & Updates: The hand-powered tram that once crossed the gorge is no longer in routine use, and infrastructure has been discussed/updated over recent years—check local trail or visitor-resources for current crossing status before you go.

Trail Highlights:

Gorge Views & Waterfalls: The narrow, moss-draped gorge and the sound of rushing glacial water make this section spectacular and photogenic.
Accessible Wilderness Near Anchorage: Winner Creek packs a lot of Alaskan forest-and-creek scenery close to Anchorage/Girdwood—great for visitors who want dramatic landscape without deep backcountry travel.
Family-Friendly Lower Section: The lower trail’s boardwalks, relatively gentle grades, and close proximity to resort parking make it friendly for families, walkers, and photographers.

Additional Information:

Weather & Preparedness: Alaska’s weather is famously changeable—check the forecast, carry extra layers, and allow extra time if conditions turn.
Trail Condition Notes: The route is one of the Chugach’s most popular hikes—expect other hikers during peak season. If you plan to push into upper Winner Creek or link to other trails (Berry Pass, Twentymile River routes), prepare for longer distances and more rugged terrain.
